John's professional career started in Dartmouth High School, Sandwell in 1979, where he held responsibilities including Head of Lower School Science, Head of Chemistry, TVEI, Records of Achievement, Assessment and Curriculum.

Whilst in Sandwell John was seconded to evaluate aspects of the National Curriculum across Sandwell schools and then became deeply involved in a range of strategic initiatives across the borough including, upon moving to Churchfields High school as Deputy Head Teacher, "Black Country New Start" . Upon his appointment as Head Teacher at Churchfields High School, John successfully led the school out of Special Measures. In 2000 the school was listed in the top ten most improved sixth forms in the country, and was also given a school improvement award.

In 2001, John became Headteacher at Kings Norton High School, a school situated in one of the most socially challenged areas of the Birmingham. A Successful Ofsted in February 2002 said, "Leadership and management are good overall… strong leadership is emerging. The very recently appointed head teacher has an exciting vision for the school and is in pursuit of a very clear direction, which he has conveyed to his deputies and he has enabled them to move forward. The effectiveness of such leadership has enabled satisfactory management procedures to be put in place…"

In 2004 John became an advisory headteacher for Birmingham before continuing his work independently though "J L Williams Education".

The work with J L Williams Education has been wide and varied, from supporting individual schools to commissioning the outsourcing of  an education service for a West Midlands Authority: still the largest such outsourcing in Europe.

In 2010 the Company was incorporated as "J L Williams Consultancy Limited"
