 With a career spanning nearly 20 years in local government, Karen has gained extensive expertise at senior leadership level in the children’s services, regeneration and corporate sectors. She has an impressive record in delivering major transformational change; building and leading high performing teams to achieve significant change in service delivery. Karen worked directly for the Interim Chief Executive and Assistant Chief Executive and regularly reported to government offices, Ministers and Councillors. She led a project team of 25 senior officers to achieve significant improvement in Walsall’s performance which transformed the corporate governance of the council. This led to the lifting of Government Intervention.
Karen was the project manager of the team that delivered the largest outsourced education services contract in Europe (£345m). This enabled her to demonstrate her ability to ensure projects are delivered on time and to the quality required and to use her effective influencing skills to foster and maintain collaboration, loyalty and excellence within the project team. She has since used these skills to deliver the £100m investment from the Building Schools for the Future programme.
Karen has an impressive track record of troubleshooting, resolving major issues within the council. For example, as Acting Head of Personnel and Development she turned round a failing service. She was responsible for 150 staff and an annual budget of £3m and resolved some very sensitive issues between officers and members. Following external criticism of the council’s failure to have an effective community engagement mechanism, she was asked by the Chief Executive to establish nine locality-based partnerships with membership made up from key partners (Police, Health, Education, housing associations, and community representatives) and ward councillors.
